Fulton Residents Want Lobbyists' Gifts to Legislators Limited

Both Democrats and Republicans were asked on Tuesday's primary ballots if they wanted an end to unlimited gifts to lawmakers, and county voters agreed with the rest of Georgia.

Georgia residents overwhelmingly agree that lobbyists need a limit placed on the gifts they give state legislators.

Both Republican and Democratic ballots in Tuesday's primary had non-binding questions used to gauge the mood of the electorate.

Democrats just asked their party members if they favored ending the current practice of unlimited gifts to state legislators. Republicans asked the same thing, but were more specific by suggesting a $100 cap on gifts.

With 158 of 159 counties reporting, more than 72 percent of Democrats and 87 percent of Republicans favored putting a stop to unlimited gifts. More than 1.2 million voters want limits, while almost 280,000 voted no on these questions.

In Fulton County, the percentages were similar. Almost 77 percent (57,612) of Democrats who voted wanted limits. More than 87 percent (43,082) of Republicans wanted the $100 limit.
