Few Post Offices Stay Open Late on Tax Day

Alpharetta Post Offices close at 6 p.m. today, so last minute tax filers will need to drive north to Cumming or east to Duluth if they miss that time.

Last minute tax filers are running out of time to get that postmark if they are mailing and not filing online. The Alpharetta Post Offices will close at the normal time, at 6 p.m.

Both the and the close at 6 p.m. Going north isn't much help, as the also closes at that time. And going south gets the same results–the has the same closing hour.

But two Contract Postal Unit (CPU) locations in the Cumming area are open late. Leon's Food Mart, on Matt Highway is open until 10 p.m., and the  is open until 11 p.m.

If you've really run out of time, you'll just have to drive a little farther. The Atlanta Main Post Office on Crown Road is open from 6 a.m. until midnight year round. But a little bit closer is the Boggs Road Postal Store at 1605 Boggs Road in Duluth. While its normal hours have it closing at 7, tonight it will be staffed to collect returns until midnight.

The tax-filing deadline is typically April 15, however filers had two extra days this year because of Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., that will be observed this year on Monday, April 16. Under the federal tax code, filing deadlines can't fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.

Tips to consider:

  • Hand your returns to outside collection employees (where available)
  • Use Self Service Ship and Mail Centers for stamp purchases
  • Double check returns for the proper address and correct postage
  • Mail weighing 13 ounces or more must be presented at the retail counter.
