EDITOR'S NOTE: Alpharetta-Milton Patch invites each candidate in Alpharetta and Milton to submit or post an announcement on a run for office. Candidates, whether incumbents or challengers, are encouraged to communicate with voters by blogging on Patch. The following announcement was submitted by Donald Mitchell, incumbent councilman.

Alpharetta City Councilman, Donald Mitchell announces that he will seek re-election to his Post 1 seat this November.  His Committee is hosting a campaign Kick-off party July 9, 2013 at Smokejack at 6 p.m.  Everyone is invited to attend.

Donald Mitchell was elected in November 2011 to fill an unexpired term of 2 years, and is now seeking a full term on council. The hallmark of Mitchell’s tenure in office has been his focus on team building amongst council, city staff and citizens.  This successful collaboration has allowed many of the platform issues Mitchell ran on during his 2011 campaign to reach fruition.  Most notably, a resurgence in business retention and recruitment as well as a renewed focus from Alpharetta citizens with the “Keep it Local Campaign” this encourages citizens to purchase goods and services from local vendors.  These were critical points of Mitchell’s 2011 campaign.   As liaison to downtown, Mitchell’s emphasis has been on the revitalization of downtown, through the Beautification / flower planter program, landscape improvements and pocket park enhancements.  He has also actively supported more events for the city, such as The Brew Moon Fest, The European and Farmers Markets, and The Food Truck Alley, which he believes builds a sense of community.

Donald has committed countless hours working on The City Center Committee in which every detail is painstakingly discussed and planned.  This council has presided over numerous ribbon cuttings, The City Center,  Avalon, West Side Parkway and soon we will be celebrating the ground breaking of Gwinnett Tech Alpharetta.  Mitchell also chairs the Historic Preservation Initiative of the Alpharetta Historic Society.  He hopes to initiate and identify at least 45 historic structures and sites and incentivize their preservation.  Donald believes, “ The character of our city, the heart and soul of Alpharetta, needs to be protected so that our village like feel is not diminished.”   A cornerstone of his service is to always ask these questions: “Does this enhance our citizen’s quality of life? Do folks love where they live?  How can we better help our citizens and attract visitors to our great city?

This council has collectively supported the lowest millage rate in the state, the highest number of police officers per citizen, and parks and recreation that continues to receive countless state wide awards, he believes we can continue to improve on what we have.

The momentum has just begun, there is so much more to accomplish to keep Alpharetta moving forward and that is the one reason why he is running for reelection.  “Through hard work, perseverance and focus I plan to do my part, to make this city the place that other municipalities wish to emulate”, Mitchell stated.   “In the areas of technology, quality of life, and a higher standard of living, we must keep reaching new plateaus.”   A vote for Donald Mitchell is a vote for a hardworking, energetic visionary who really cares about this fine city.
