Crews Moving Utilities Slow Downtown Alpharetta Traffic

Most of the utility work is being performed along Haynes Bridge Road north of Publix.

Construction on Haynes Bridge Road between Academy Street and Old Milton Parkway may be completed, but utility work is affecting traffic.

Academy Park resident George Irving stopped by the Alpharetta City Council meeting on Monday night to complain that the work to move utility lines was creating a dangerous situation. He suggested closing the section  of Haynes Bridge north of the traffic circle near Publix and extending to Academy Street if crews needed to do so much work.

Engineering Director Pete Sewczwicz said on Tuesday that utility crews aren't just moving power lines. They are moving the main transmission line that feeds North Fulton, he said. "It's not a simple endeavor."

At the same time, other crews are moving utility lines within the City Center project.

"They just happened to be there at the same time," Sewczwicz said.

He contacted both companies to get them to better coordinate lane closings. On Tuesday afternoon there was only one lane closure just north of the traffic circle. Another crew had parts of the southbound Haynes Bridge lanes closed as they marked traffic lanes. And until the heavy commuting hours began, a single lane northbound on Main Street beside Alpharetta City Hall was closed near the Academy Street intersection. Expect periodic lane closures and blockages as work continues on the City Center.
