Alpharetta Can Tell City What to do With Vaughn-GA 9 Intersection

The city plans a left turn lane and sidewalk extensions.

Alpharetta residents can weigh in on what they think of planned intersection and sidewalk improvements at GA 9 and Vaughn Drive at a public information openhouse on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The open house will be held at the Engineering/Public Works building on Hembree Road. No formal presentation will be made, so residents can stop by anytime between 6 and 8 p.m.

The current design will be available to view. It includes a left-turn lane for businesses near the intersection and at the GA 9 at Vaughn Drive intersection itself.

It will also provide sidewalk connection from the Vaughn Drive intersection south to the existing sidewalk near Canton Street extension.

Representatives from the Alpharetta Engineering / Public Works Department will be available to answer questions about the plan and receive comments and concerns.

This intersection needs a traffic signal! Residences in the Garden District have been asking for this for years, only to be told that it isn't warranted. Now with the near completion of a huge senior residential complex on Vaughn Drive, the traffic will only get worse. This is a serious safety issue. Turning left from Vaughn into 45 mph traffic is very risky any time of the day. I hope the City Engineers listen to and act on the safety concerns of the citizens and install a signal!

I couldn't agree with Mr. Paine more. This intersection has been an ongoing discussion for years. Ken Foster and others in the GD have long (and rightfully) suggested that this much needed improvement would make that intersection safer and move cut-through traffic on Hopewell and put it on Hwy 9 (where it should be). This is good for everyone.

That intersection needs a a traffic signal for sure! If sidewalks are added, lets make sure they get you somewhere! There's a large amount of sidewalks in Alpharetta that get you no where and you end up having to walk/run on the road and some drivers are not too courteous which makes it dangerous.

Hopefully the sidewalks will go in both directions from Vaughn - it is so dangerous to walk/bike on/near Highway 9 in that area. I agree with Myrna, too many sidewalks to nowhere in Alpharetta! Completion of them would be great. I've been hit on my bike once with several near misses.

There are some existing sidewalks just to the north and south of this intersection that need to be ripped up and redone. One of them has adjacent concrete tipped at opposing angles making a shallow "V" – but not so shallow that you couldn't easily trip up, as at the ends the concrete tilts up higher than your shoes.

This shouldn't even be a design review. I don't think a left hand turn from Vaughan onto Hwy 9 should be allowed at all. Right turn only out of Vaughan until/if the LCI initiatives are adopted.
A left turn only lane from Hwy 9 onto Vaughan would be a fine addition though.

Agreed, is there significant volume to justify putting a left turn lane onto Hwy 9 from there?
Slightly off subject, but why do people stop there to pay a higher amount for fuel to begin with?

When was a traffic study last completed ? It seems with additional development it ought to be updated. I'm concerned a nasty accident might happen there one day under present conditions.

We definitely need a traffic signal here. It is only a matter of time until someone loses their life! I feel like I am risking mine every time I make a left turn on Hiway 9 off of Vaughn!
