Alpharetta, Milton Projects Remain on Smaller Transportation Funding List

The funding for these projects would come from a one-percent regional sales tax imposed for 10 years–if voters approve it in 2012.

Transportation projects in Alpharetta and Milton remain after the Atlanta Regional Roundtable staff cut a $22.9 billion proposal list in about half, though North Fulton's representative refused to look at it locally.

“When the elected officials are sitting around the roundtable, they are asked to do something very important–to step outside their jurisdictions,” said Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, who is a non-voting member of the committee.

“I refuse to look at this locally–there are projects I support outside of my jurisdiction,” he added, explaining that these projects will still have an impact on North Fulton commuters.

Staff cut the list to $15.9 billion in projects, but recommended that many of those projects only be partially funded, dropping the total to $12.2 billion. Even that cut won't be enough.

Bodker said it’s important that the committees choose projects that will have the biggest impact on the collective metro-Atlanta community since, if voters approve the referendum, it will only fund $7 billion of $120 billion of projects that need funding.

“Long term we will have to find additional revenue or pass additional referendums,” he said.

Bodker serves on the committee as a partner with Mayor Ralph Moore from South Fulton. He said that while he does not have a vote, he and Moore work together to cast a vote representing Fulton County.
