Alpharetta Council Approves Mosque Expansion

Vote follows recommendation from Planning Commission.

Alpharetta City Council voted Monday night to approve a proposal to expand the Islamic Center of North Fulton, according to multiple media reports.

The Alpharetta Planning Commission voted earlier this month to recommend approval to expand the mosque, located at 1265 Rucker Road. Mosque supporters had been seeking expansion since 2011, pointing to its growing membership, which is now close to 600 members.

Moiz Mumtaz, chairman of the mosque's board of trustees, told CBS Atlanta said the new design is roughly 6,000 square feet smaller than what was proposed in 2011.

Opponents complained a bigger mosque would create noise and traffic issues.
