Weather Forecast Causes Alpharetta City Council to Cancel Retreat

Winter storm forecast causes elected officials to postpone discussions on economic development, Westside Parkway and Gwinnett Tech.

UPDATED: Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard confirmed at 8:15 p.m. Jan. 9 that the City Council retreat scheduled to start Monday, Jan. 10 has been canceled.

City Council might regret not picking a location for its annual retreat even farther south than The Inn at Serenbe in Palmetto, the location that had been chosen for a retreat on Monday, Jan. 10 and Tuesday, Jan. 11.

City Council, staff and any interested residents would have faced a 120-plus mile round trip drive to the retreat. Possible snow, freezing rain and ice made it a moot point.

Council had planned to discuss its economic development plan and comprehensive land use plan updates, city center and Alpharetta’s financial outlook on Monday. Tuesday would have started with a discussion of a bond referendum timeline, followed by updates on Gwinnett Tech’s North Fulton campus plans and Westside Parkway. Only the stretch of Westside Parkway between Webb Bridge Road and Old Milton Parkway remains incomplete. A Thomas Enterprise company’s bankruptcy and foreclosure on the property have kept the road in legal limbo as Wells Fargo attempts to get a clear title on the property.

The retreat has not been rescheduled at this time.
