Shop With A Cop Helps Kids Buy Presents, But Many Buy Family Gifts

The Alpharetta Police Athletic League gave underprivileged kids $100 to spend on holiday gifts at Walmart.

Shop With A Cop is a national event that gives underprivileged children a chance to buy Holiday gifts. At the on Windward Parkway last night, the spirit of giving was in full force.

This year’s Shop With A Cop in Alpharetta was hosted by the Alpharetta Police Athletic League (PAL). Police and firefighters from both Alpharetta and Milton helped the kids.

Enough money was raised for there to be 110 kids at this year’s event and policemen, firefighters and some public safety volunteers conducted them around the store. Nothing in the store was off limits. Some of the kids headed straight for the video games while others were more concerned with gifts for their family.

One of the participants, Lynze, bought a tube of lip-gloss for herself but then an iTunes giftcard and a Wii video game for her siblings. Another child, Joshua, bought only a box of his favorite cereal for himself and spent the rest of the money on his mother.

Veronica Carew, the executive director of Alpharetta PAL, says the donations for the event come from North Fulton Charities and local schools.

“The children are selected by the school’s counselors and then all the donations go to the children. Each child receives one hundred dollars to spend on themselves but most of them spend it on friends and family,” Carew said.
