Milton Woman Makes Mistake of Sharing Debit Card Info

The following information was supplied by the Milton police department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 68-year-old Milton woman made the mistake of giving out her debit card information over the phone to a loud young man claiming to work for Wells Fargo.

The loud man called her at home at 5:30 p.m. on July 8 and claimed there was fraudulent activity on her account. He claimed to need her account information for confirmation purposes. She gave him her account information and he hung up.

The victim immediately hung up, but it took 20 minutes for someone to talk to her. By that time, someone had racked up $120 and $69 payments on her account. She cancelled her debit card. The real Wells Fargo employee told her to file a police report to recover her stolen money.

Even the police can be victims of theft. A Milton officer picking up his department issued Ford Explorer saw that someone had stolen the 2014 tag decal off the license plate sometime since he parked it on July 3.

The officer had left the vehicle behind the Milton Fire State No. 43 on July 3, returning on July 10 to drive it when he saw the decal was gone.

Former Employee Fails to Fix, Return Laptops

A Bethany Way woman let a former employee take two laptops to ostensibly fix them, and also an iPhone 3 to test if it worked with his wireless carrier. That was weeks before Thanksgiving 2012, and as of July 9 he still hadn't returned anything to her or paid her for the iPhone.

On March 1 she emailed him to complain. He replied, saying he had medical problems and would ship the laptops back to her, something he still hasn't done. Even a call to the Lake Monticello Police Department in Virginia where she says he lives got nothing more than a repeated promise to ship the laptops and payment – though Milton police haven't been able to reach the officer who she said spoke to the suspect.

The Milton officer advised the Milton resident that she could go before a judge in Georgia or Virginia to file a complaint for a warrant against them man.

Young Man Drives Off in BMW Without Paying for Gas

An 18-20-year-old man drove his green BMW off from a gas station on July 9 without paying.

The Crabapple Shell station employee told Milton police the young man had come into the store to buy a Coke and a Mountain Dew. He left a debit card in the store and said he'd be back inside to pay for his gas.

But after he finished pumping gas into his car, he drove off without paying.

The store employee tried to run the debit card through for payment, but it was declined.

The Milton officer called the bank that issued the debit card and learned it has been cancelled a year ago.

Expensive Watch Missing After Move

A Triple Crown Drive resident is missing a $4,000 watch after moving to a new home this month.

The victim reported the suspected theft on July 11. He told Milton police he thought it happened during the move on July 1. He and his wife searched the family's new home and the old address without success.

The owner of the moving company advised him to file a police report.

Thief Opens Fraudulent Wireless Account in Las Vegas

A Milton man got a bill on July 10 from Verizon Wireless for an account he never opened.

The victim reported to Milton police that the fraudulent account was opened on July 1. He was reporting it to police to satisfy Verizon's request for a police report.

The Milton officer also told him to check with credit reporting agencies and to provide the Las Vegas police department with any documents about this fraud.
