Milton Police Arrest Burglary Suspect

Roswell man charged in three cases, with Dawson and Gwinnett planning to file warrants.

Milton police believe they have solved at least three burglary cases from February and March with the arrest of a 43-year-old Roswell man.

Reginald Dwayne Byrd was arrested on two counts of burglary, financial transaction card fraud and financial transaction card theft, according to a news release from Capt. Shawn McCarty. Byrd is in Fulton County Jail on a $20,000 bond. More charges and other suspects are probable, said Milton police, with Gwinnett and Dawson County authorities seeking warrants.

According to the Georgia State Department of Corrections Web site, Byrd has a past history of robbery, burglary, numerous thefts, forgery and drugs and was released from parole on Feb. 14.

He was arrested at his Crossville Court home in Roswell April 26 during a joint effort between Milton officers and the City of Roswell Police Department's SWAT team. Milton police responded to the following burglaries listed in the charges:

  • Feb. 11 at 14705 Birmingham Highway, more than $1,700 in jewelry taken;
  • Feb. 18 at 15450 Thompson Road;
  • and March 7 at 255 Hickory Flat Road, chainsaw, laptops worth $2,000.

In each of the burglaries, items including jewelry, credit cards and electronics were taken.

According to Milton police detective Kevin Barry, Byrd allegedly used one of the cards taken in the burglaries. Surveillance photos gave investigators an image of the car possibly used in the crimes-a car that was later tied to Byrd. A laptop stolen from one of the homes was also allegedly tracked to him.

A check of local pawn shops showed Byrd had been selling jewelry, electronics and tools. Victims identified some of these items as stolen property, while others were matched to crimes by make and serial number.

Based on this evidence, Barry obtained arrest warrants for Byrd, along with a search warrant for his Roswell home. Due to his criminal past, Milton police and Roswell's SWAT team worked together to bring him into custody on April 26.

After making sure all children were out of the home, officers served the warrants, arresting Byrd and detaining two other adults. One of them, Amber Thompson, was charged by Roswell police with misdemeanor marijuana possession.

During a search of Byrd's home, officers found numerous pieces of jewelry, electronics, silver tableware and tools. Some of the items of jewelry and a television were tied to Milton cases, and the silverware was tied to a Gwinnett County burglary in April. Additionally, Dawson County Sheriff's deputies obtained eight more warrants for Byrd for three burglaries in their jurisdiction.
