Identity Thieves Steal Funds Out of E-Gift Cards

The following information was supplied by the Milton police department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

An Alpharetta man who received two $100 Walmart e-gift cards for buying two iPads at the store got to spend $35 on one of the cards before someone fraudulently emptied both cards of their monetary value.

The victim told Milton police bought the iPads on Dec. 15, 2013 at the Walmart on Windward Parkway in Milton and received the gift cards in a store promotion. Two weeks later he made his only purchase with one of the e-gift cards, spending $35.42.

However, on New Year's Eve he checked the balance of the cards for the available balances and discovered both had been emptied of any value. The remaining balances of both cards were used on Dec. 30, 2013 at a Walmart in Secaucus, NJ.
