Driver Stopped for Canceled Tag Hit with Drug-Related Charge

The following arrest information was supplied by the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. It does not indicate a conviction.

Driving an SUV on a learner's permit with a canceled registration was enough for a Roswell man to be arrested. The odor of marijuana in the Ford Explorer led to another charge.

An Alpharetta police officer spotted a 2012 sticker on the Ford Explorer he was following westbound on Webb Bridge Road near Morris Road at 2:57 a.m. on July 30. The tag was checked and returned canceled as of Jan. 20, 2012.

After the vehicle was stopped, the driver told the officer he knew his tag was canceled. He said the vehicle had been parked for a while, and he was going to get it repaired so it could pass the emissions test.

A check of the driver's license revealed it as a class CP instructional permit, which requires a licensed driver to be in the vehicle also. No one else was in the Ford Explorer.

The smell of marijuana led the officer to search the SUV once he had a backup officer on scene. He found a digital scale inside a backpack on the rear seat that contained what he suspected was marijuana residue.
