Diplomatic Status Forces Roswell Police to Let Alpharetta Man Go

Roswell Police were required to release Mariano Saynez-Ruiz-Duran, a vice consular to the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta, after he was pulled over for speeding and DUI.

Mexican vice consular Mariano Saynez-Ruiz-Duran was pulled over last Friday by Roswell Police for going 91 mph on Ga. 400, only to find he was also driving under the influence, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

But, according to Roswell Police Spokesman James McGee, the Alpharetta resident was not detained because of his partial diplomatic immunity status. However, Saynez-Ruiz-Duran was cited as a "super speeder" for going 91  in a 65 mph zone and also cited for a DUI.

"We did make contact with the Diplomatic Security Service to verify the driver’s status of immunity," said McGee, noting that Saynez-Ruiz-Duran's wife was called to the scene to drive the car once police let him go.

According to the AJC, Saynez-Ruiz-Duran is the son of a Mexican Navy admiral. He told police he had "two to three vodkas" roughly 30 minutes prior at the Tongue and Groove, a nightclub in Buckhead.
