Dr. Avossa of Fulton County Schools Off Course

Fulton superintendent of schools criticized for his comments, actions over Fulton Science Academy.

In a few short months Dr. Avossa has accomplished what no other Superintendent has done nationwide ---

He has denied a charter for the only nationally acclaimed school in his district.

He has denied a charter for the top Math and Science school in Fulton County and one that ranks in the top 5 in the state.

He has belittled the efforts of the parents, students, faculty, and staff saying in public forums including Rotary and Community Meetings that this Nationally Ranked and Award Wining school is not special and in fact is just average and mediocre.

He has refused to participate in mediation that was requested by the State Board of Education, Leading Legislators, and Business Leaders.

He has caused investors to not only question their $19 million investment in the Alpharetta community but also question future investments in the State of Georgia and nationally in education.

He has on numerous occasions through his actions and words told elected officials and representatives of the people of the State of Georgia  that he knows what is best and that they should keep their opinions to themselves.

All because this newly minted Dr. of Education knows better and is smarter than us all

We need to dismantle government education as it exists. Bottom line. It is filled with federal, state, and local power-trippers like this one. Shame on this mediocrity seeking person, Dr. Avossa. Pull your kids out of the schools.

Calm, intelligent, well-reasoned reply there, Lisa. One hopes you have no intention of home schooling!

A quote from Dr. Avossa at a meeting with parents delivered at Spalding Elementary School during Julia Benath's meeting in early December. "I don't negotiate with individual parents. I never have and never will." 1) Dr. Avossa failed in negotiating with the FSA MS Board. 2) He refuses to negotiate with parents 3) He will not negotiate with the State of Georgia or accept their offer of mediation. The ladies of the FCBOE have selected an inflexible man as their pitchman. His lack of negotiating skills and his dogmatic approach will result in 400 students being sent to lower performing schools (compared to FS MS) across North Fulton. Well done FCBOE. .

What a big disappointment FCBOE has become. As if Georgia needs another educational black eye...

Is Dr. Avossa a citizen of the USA?

Tom Deeb, do you think attacking Dr. Avossa is going to get FSAMS back it's charter? I would suggest that people such as yourself, the proponents of the school, should be focusing more constructively on building the private school that they claim FSAMS was. At their own expense and not the taxpayers of Fulton County. I find it more than a little interesting, that immediately after "Fulton Science Academy MS Audit Reveals Many Problems" article comments finally go silent you want to wipe the slate clean and start the argument all over again. I have read MANY articles from many reputable sources, looked at the audit , looked at FCSS records on this, GDOE records on this, comments and concerns they expressed, followed links and generally done my own due diligence on the subject. I have no dog in this fight other than I am a taxpayer. My conclusion is that there is MORE than enough evidence to back ALL of the people who have decided to cancel/not renew the charter. Please do yourself, the children you claim to be so concerned about and the entire school community a favor and put your energy in the right direction. There is more than enough blame that points DIRECTLY to the actions of the FSAMS Board and leaders of the school, for the disaster you find yourselves in.
