Harry Jordan Barnes, 84: Moved to Alpharetta Closer to Daughters

Harry Jordan Barnes, age 84, formerly of Manchester, GA died Thursday, June 27, 2013 in Rome, GA following an illness of several months. Harry was born on June 16, 1929 in Manchester, son of the late Albert Jordan Barnes, Jr. and Lois Huddleston Barnes. He lived in Manchester for 82 years, moving to Alpharetta in 2011 to be near his daughters.

Harry was a graduate of Manchester High School, North Georgia College, and Auburn University. Upon graduation from Auburn, he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following discharge from the army, he returned to Manchester to work with his father at Manchester Parts Company. He opened several parts stores throughout west Georgia, eventually selling them and beginning a career in real estate in 1972. He was the owner of Harry Barnes Realty and was instrumental in bringing many industries and growth to Manchester where he served as a City Commissioner and on the Manchester Development Authority. He was a mason and a Shriner. Harry was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Manchester where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and served on the Administrative Board.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Frankie Vickers Barnes, to whom he was married on Nov. 18, 1950, and three daughters, Becky Barnes of Smyrna, Susan Babb, and her husband Bill, of Rome, and Harriet Treadway and her husband, Benny, of Marietta. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jordan Banks and his wife, Sarah, Tyler Treadway, Rebecca Odom and her husband, Derek, Allison Treadway, Whit Treadway, and David Banks. Three great-granddaughters, Aubrey and Jocelyn Banks, and Addie Odom, also survive, in addition to several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Manchester, with the Rev. Queon Smith officiating, assisted by the Rev. Leslee Samuelson. Interment will follow at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Jordan Banks, Tyler Treadway, Whit Treadway, David Banks, Derek Odom and Paul Barnes serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be M.B. Guy, Jim Beavers, Donne Harrell, Jimmy Dyer, Atticus Mathis and member of the Men's Bible Class.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday evening, June 30, from 6-8 pm at Cox Funeral Home, Manchester.
