The Milton High School track & field teams again split up their rosters and competed in two meets last weekend with a big presence at the 14th annual Coaches Invitational held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and another squad at the 18th annual Roswell Rotary Relays at Roswell High School. At the Coaches Invitational the Eagles set 4 new school records and re-wrote the school top-10 listing in almost every event a Milton athlete competed in.

GIRLS

The Lady Eagles set two school relay records at the Coaches Invitational and one new school record as well.  The team of Caroline Winnett, Simone Harford, Kia Carson & Devon Artis broke the 800m Sprint Medley record from 2010 by 1.6 seconds going 1:51.37 to place 9th with Artis splitting a 57.5 for her 400m anchor leg! The co-ed 1600m Sprint Medley also took down a 4 year old record going 4:04.67 to break the record by 1.15 seconds in finishing 14th!  That team included Eliza Meng, Will Bond, Chloe Clark & Matt McGorrey.  Junior Amy Ruiz, running her 2nd of 3 events of the meet, established the girl’s 2000m Steeplechase school record (5th-8:13.76).

BOYS

Milton had two runner-up performances that paced the Eagles at Georgia Tech. On Friday evening of the two-day meet, Corey Claiborne shocked many with his discus toss of 141’5”, setting a new personal best by 2.5 feet and is now within 10 feet of the storied school record of 148’2.5” set in 1962!  On Saturday, the Eagle 4x800m relay came from as far back as 7th to place 2nd (8:05.26) in the 2nd fastest time in school history missing the school record by a mere 1.18 seconds!  The team of senior Kevin McGorrey (2:01.6), freshman Michael McCarthy (2:02.3), junior Mickey Newell (2:01.5) & sophomore Jack Bluth (1:59.8) improved on their team time from their performance at Mill Creek a week ago by 13 seconds!

ROSWELL RELAYS

The Milton teams found scoring team points few and far between as a mostly junior varsity squad competed against some very strong varsity squads from 29 competing schools.  On the Lady Eagles side, junior Juanita Pardo scored the most team points with her personal best effort in the 3200 meters (6th-12:05.81) after running a personal best in the 1600m at Georgia Tech the night before on the 4x1600m relay squad. Her 3200m performance was the 8th fastest in school history!  The Lady Eagles also got a team point from their 4x800m relay team (8th-10:59.36) of seniors Kim Toscano & Katie Robinson, junior Hallie Howell & sophomore Marley Brown.  For the boys of Milton, Matt Ballard was the lone scorer for the Eagles as he placed 7th in the pole vault (9’6”).

Next on the calendar, the Eagles host the North Georgia JV Challenge on Wednesday, March 19th as 11 schools are slated to compete at Milton.
