Top 10 Reasons Why I Love Plants

May my brief list gives you clarity on the importance of plants.

10)  Plants are a fun challenge to figure out.  What is it?  How do I grow it?  Is it native?  How do I keep the deer from eating it?

9)  I don't have to have a lot of money to enjoy plants.

8)  Plants provide income - to farmers, the nursery industry, landscapers, grocers, scientists, restaurants - the list goes on and on.

7)  Plants go home at 9:00, e.g. they go dormant in winter to give me a break.

6)  Plants provide a sometimes therapeutic, mindless chore.

5)  Plants are our original medicines and still function as medical cures.

4)  Plant are beautiful:  from the wee face of a daisy to the grandeur of a forest to the artistic rendering on canvas.

3)  Plants feed me.  I depend completely on the plant world for food, whether vegetarian or not.  Cows eat grass.

2)  Plants remind me of the continual cycle of life.  There is a time to die and yet, life goes on.

1)  Plants don't have politics.

Julie~Enjoyed your Positive comments! I'm new to Georgia Plants, so I have a few Questions: Do I leave 'Purslane' Hanging Basket outside during Winter? How about Eucalyptus planted in Big Pots? Last Question, and thank you very much--my potted Hibiscus--take Inside?

Thanks Pamela! Purslane is an annual. It's going to die on you. There'll be much more next spring at big box stores and growing wild along roadways. The plants I know and love are native to north Georgia and/or suited to our zone 7a and 7b - so I can't help you with the hibiscus and eucalyptus questions. But we are lucky to be served by a wonderful UGA county extension service, located at the North Fulton Government Annex on Roswell Road. Master gardeners volunteer there every week and they have scads and scads of information at their fingertips. Call them. They'll be happy to answer your questions. Phone: (404) 613-7670
