In Training

The only way I know to deal with my aches and pains is to start running.

These are my 50 year old feet inside some new running shoes.

This is my best laid plan for dealing with my aches and pains.  Oh, you may think I'm in fine shape, what with me out there in the garden plantin' and diggin' away the long hours.  Believe me, my main work for the Alpharetta Community Garden is actually at my desk dealing with information transfer.  Ironic.

But I have these aches and pains.  "They" say these aches come with age.  This must be true, because the aches arrived in full barrage about a month after I turned 50, which was last fall.  So, I'm falling back on what has always made me feel better throughout life - being active.  Really active.  About 1 hour + a day worth of walking and running acive.  And since I'm too impatient to constantly walk, I've decided to pick up the pace and start running.

Now, I'm not a new runner.  I ran a half-marathon back in 2005.  Thing is, that was 7 years ago and sure enough, I haven't run since then.  Amazingly hard to pick it up back up 7 years later and at 50, but I will do it because I have a race as my goal.  The Peachtree, you ask?  No, I ran my Peachtree 7 years ago as well and got that out of my system.  Actually, my goal is none other than the Alpharetta Old Soldiers Day 5K.  It's far enough out timewise that I'll be in shape by then.  It's close to home.  And 5K's suit my fast twitch muscles much better.  I'll never be a distancer.

So, just wanted to let you know I'm training.  See you at the Old Soldiers Day Parade, barring sickness or errant tornadic events, where I shall be aiming to win my division - the 50 year olds.
