Donald Mitchell - Rock Star

Donald Mitchell has gone where no local guy has gone before - onto a reality show. Yes, into a genre of television shows that has brought fame and fortune to the likes of the Kardashians, countless entrepreneurs on Shark Tank, and Atlanta’s own NeNe Leakes comes one of Alpharetta’s own – Donald Mitchell.  In case you haven't heard already, Donald made a guest appearance on the new reality show, “Big Rich Atlanta”. If you haven’t watched it, apparently it is aired on Sunday evenings.  And since Downton Abbey is over for the season, that opens up the Sunday time slot for many of us.

Ah, reality shows - that scintillating drama type that morphed out of MTV back in the 1990's, spawning show after show.   Donald Trump has shown us his powers of decision on “Celebrity Apprentice”.  Mark Cuban and his billionaire colleagues on “Shark-Tank” have the power to make new millionaires out of small time business owners with a nod of their head.   Back when I had cable I was addicted to “The Rachel Zoe Project” because she answered every woman’s question of how Demi Moore can look so great at her age.  (It’s Rachel Zoe, of course!). Real Housewives of Atlanta gave us NeNe – from small town Athens, Georgia and now a Hollywood star.  Oh sure, The “Real Housewives of…” series makes the most of displaying drama in the lives of women, much of it prompted and not quite real, but it’s great for a laugh and makes good office conversation the next day.  I’ve heard that “Big Rich Atlanta” is along this vain.  How could it not be with a name like “Big Rich Atlanta”? 

Surely, it goes without saying that reality shows should not be taken at face value.  The fun is the shock value and real life isn’t nearly as shocking as these shows make it seem.  But, that’s the trick.  The producers want you to believe it’s real and therefore shocking.  That’s what makes people watch.  Sells advertising.
