A conspiracy theory is the belief that individuals or organizations weild significant power whereby they cause an event of great social or political importance, usually by clandestine means or by deception.
You’ve heard the usual fare: GW caused 9/11; Bin Laden is still alive; no one actually walked on the moon. But conspiracy theories aren’t necessarily so grandiose. They might occur near home and involve PTA’s, coaches, principals, teachers, city council members, businesses, bosses, neighbors. It’s relative to your situation and who has power.

It doesn’t take a genius to take advantage of the fact that we can be kind of dumb as humans and so, in a sense, I believe in conspiracy theories, although “conspiracy” is probably too grand a word for it. I just think that people and situations can be taken advantage of by those in power when they realize that folks don’t always look for facts or ask questions. Life is complicated and deserves questions and hopefully answers.

On the other hand, I don’t believe in conspiracy theories because I also think that those in power are equally as dumb as those of us who are gullible or don't question as we should. Maybe these people in power are not dumb all the time, just dumb enough that they can’t pull off multi-agency, clandestine, highly organized events. “Three Days of the Condor” is a fantastic movie but life is not a movie, TV drama or novel. Life is a lot more regular and average than paranoid types would like to believe.
