GFCI's

Do you know why you have GFCI's in your home, or even what they are? A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter is a protective device first introduced to home building in 1971 (73). This device is placed anywhere that water and electricity can mix--not a good thing!! It detects when electricity is flowing to ground such as shocking a person. When the device detects this fault, it shuts off the power to the circuit or device. GFCI's are terrific devices that save hundreds of lives each year. The only problem is that they can break which allows them to provide electricity but lose the ability to protect. Test them regularly by pushing the test button on the unit which causes the unit to trip. Turn it back on by pushing the reset button.
