Alpharetta, Milton Students Named Positive High School Athletes

Swimmers Warren Cherry of Alpharetta High and Caroline Filan of Milton High School will be recognized at the inaugural Georgia Positive High School Athlete Awards on Saturday.

Four Fulton County high school athletes, one coach and one high school will be recognized Saturday, June 14, at the inaugural Georgia Positive High School Athlete Awards.

The event will be held 12:30 p.m. at the McCamish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech.

The 2013-2014 award winners include:

  • Boys swimming – Warren Cherry, Alpharetta High School
  • Girls swimming – Caroline Filan, Milton High School
  • Girls tennis – Rachel Deese, Roswell High School
  • Volleyball – Madison Swan, Johns Creek High School
  • Strength coach – Lou George, Westlake High School
  • Most Positive High School – Johns Creek High School

Award recipients will be honored by former Georgia Bulldogs star and Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward. 

Ward will be joined by Dr, Homer Rice, former head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and former Georgia Tech athletic director; Brian Jordan, former Atlanta Braves outfielder; and Brian Finneran, former wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons.

Other current and former professional athletes with ties to the Braves, Falcons, Hawks, Dream, the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech will honor the recipients as well as representatives from Lt. Governor Casey Cagle’s office.   

In addition, Johns Creek High School will be honored as the Most Positive High School in Georgia. Johns Creek submitted more than 50 nominations, many of which finished in the top five rankings. 

“Johns Creek High School exemplifies excellence in so many ways,” said newly appointed principal Gail Johnson. “Being recognized as a school that epitomizes a positive spirit reinforces our school culture. We believe in developing student athletes and all students to approach their pursuits with a mindset that focuses on a positive perspective.”

Six hundred nominations, representing 65 different metro Atlanta area high schools, were submitted from coaches, principals, athletic directors, teachers, and parents. 

Positive Athlete is a subsidiary of parent company Celebrate Positive, a group of high-character professional athletes who have teamed up to promote the benefits of positivity to young athletes around the world. 

In addition to excellence on the field, each nominated Positive Athlete was required to show characteristics such as an optimistic attitude, teammate encouragement, servant leadership, heart for others, ability to admit imperfections, giving 100 percent all the time, and realizing the team as more important than the individual.
