Alpharetta High School Presents 'Hairspray'

Alpharetta High School is proud to present the critically acclaimed and hugely popular musical 'Hairspray' under the direction of David Gay.

Set against the backdrop of 1960's Baltimore, Hairspray tells the story of pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad, played by senior Abby Flaxer, who fights to end segregation at a local television dance show, 'The Corny Collins Show.'  No stranger to discrimination herself, Tracy becomes an unlikely heroine inspiring those around her to examine their consciences and do what is right.

The 60's vibe is perfectly created with colorful sets and costumes designed by both parents and students.

Hairspray involves a large cast and a lot of technical support, which are reasons why Gay chose to perform this show. It allows many students the opportunity to showcase their talents. One of the main concerns Gay had in casting the show was how to find the perfect Edna,  Tracy's shy plus-sized mother,  perfectly played in the movie adaptation by John Travolta. Gay found his Edna in Senior Matt Prince. This however presented another problem, it took some ingenuity and a lot of time to hunt down size 16 women's shoes that would fit Prince.

Hairspray features an array of colorful and unforgettable characters; Velma Von Tussle, the villainous station manager played by senior Megan Snow, Velma's spoiled daughter Amber, played by freshman Morgan Shields, Motormouth Maybelle the 'big, blond and beautiful' host of  'Negro Day' played by senior Brittany Kamson, Link Larkin, Amber's boyfriend and lead dancer, played by senior Dallas Mahan and Corny Collins the shows front man, played by senior Joey Bodeep. The role of Tracy's mild-mannered father Wilbur Turnblad will be played by sophomore Conner Kocks.

Featuring a live orchestra under the direction of Assistant Band Director Tamara Dworetz, the audience is treated to songs such as the rousing 'Welcome to the 60's' as well as the poignant 'I Know Where I've Been' with its incredibly moving lyrics and melody.

With its message of acceptance and tolerance wrapped up in a sparkling musical score, Hairspray is a musical that will have you walking away with a smile on your face.

Show performances are at 7pm on March 14,15,16,23. A matinee show will be presented on March 24 at 3pm.
