Recount Scheduled for House District 22 Race

Cherokee Republican Jeff Duncan made the request as a two-vote difference separates him from second-place candidate Meagan Biello.

A candidate in the House District 22 special election who missed moving forward to the runoff by a mere two votes has called for a recount.

Republican Jeff Duncan has filed the request with the Georgia Secretary of State's office, and the recount in all three counties covered by House District 22 — Cherokee, Forsyth and north Fulton — will take place by 5 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 14, said Secretary of State Spokesman Jared Thomas.

The special election results put businessman Sam Moore in the lead. Moore garnered 924, or 37.98 percent, of the vote while 576 votes, or 23.67 percent, went to Meagan Biello, a teacher at Creekview High School

Duncan came in third place with 574 votes, or 23.59 percent, and while Nate Cochran rounded out the race with 359 votes, or 14.76 percent, respectively, according to the Secretary of State.

A runoff between Biello and Moore is set to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

With a mere two vote difference separating him and Biello, Duncan said calling for a recount made sense "out of respect of voters and the integrity of the vote."

He noted he spoke with Biello about his decision, and noted she was in favor.

"She was graciously in agreement that this was the right thing to do," he added.

Thomas added that if the recount results in a tie between Biello and Duncan, the state will address that issue "at that time."
