Recount Confirms Mitchell Won Alpharetta City Council Election

A recount this morning by Fulton County Registrations and Elections division came up with the same count, leaving the candidates seven voters apart.

More than a week after the Alpharetta municipal election, Donald Mitchell finally has been confirmed as the winner in the City Council Post 2 race.

Doug DeRito, his opponent, said this morning that the recount showed no change in the vote count.

"I lost by 7 votes, but am thankful for all the support I did receive," DeRito said in an email after observing the recount. "I called and congratulated Donald Mitchell on his win... I wished him and our City the very best."

Post 2 Results

  • Donald Mitchell – 1079 (49.88%)
  • Douglas R. DeRito – 1072 (49.56%)
  • Write-in Votes – 12 (0.55%)

DeRito had asked for the recount when the official count showed the two candidates just seven voters apart. That was much less than the 1 percent difference that allows for a near-automatic recount.

DeRito had resigned from the Post 2 City Council seat to run for Alpharetta mayor two years ago, losing that bid to David Belle Isle. Mitchell won the election to fill DeRito's unexpired term. Now he has won his first full term in office, which will be a four-year term.
