Parents Ask FSA Governing Board to Resign

A group of parents from the charter school wanted to replace the board so the school could get a state charter, but was told it was too late.

A last-minute effort by a group of parents to remove the existing Governing Board and replace it with a new group just came too late, state officials say.

Andrew Klein, who said he represents that group of parents, contacted state Department of Education Charter Division Director Louis Erste to make the offer via email just before midnight on May 9.

"It has become clear to us that the FSA Middle School Governing Board no longer has the necessary support to continue in their leadership capacity. Β in fact, during this evening's parent meeting, they were asked to offer their resignations," Klein said.

The Governing Board and administration held a parents' meeting Wednesday night to discuss the charter issue.

Erste, however, replied that the offer was seven months late, and inappropriate anyhow.

"Unfortunately, the proposal you are making on behalf of the FSAMS governing board is seven months late. Had the governing board made the governance changes suggested by Fulton County Schools in their September 2011 memo to the school, things may have turned out differently," Erste said in his email reply today, May 10.

Asking for a 30-day delay on the charter vote in exchange for the board replacement wasn't proper either, he said.

"The proposal you are making is also inappropriate because the state charter process is not a negotiation either," Erste said.
