Our top five favorite 4th of July stats.

How well do you know our nation's history? And do you realize the amount of money that's spent every year on charcoal? Here are a few fun 4th of July related statistics:

  • The U.S. imported 3.2 million American flags during 2010; 80 percent of them were imported from China.
  • When the nation first gained its independence, there were approximately 2.5 million people living in America. As of this past Friday, July 1, 2011 there are an estimated 311,670,073 people living in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau's POPClock Projection.
  • Though they were our adversaries that first Independence Day in 1776, we spent $98.3 billion trading with the British last year.
  • There are 31 places in the U.S. with "Liberty" in their name.
  • Americans spent $167 million on watermelon during 2009, according to VAHomeLoans.net.
