Fulton Launches 'Jail Dog' Program

Prisoners will learn to train impounded dogs.

Dogs facing euthanasia at Fulton County Animal Services will get a second chance in the department's new "Jail Dogs" program.

The program, a partnership of Animal Services and Canine CellMates, pairs Fulton County prisoners with animal services dogs, and has the goal of improving the social skills of inmates as well as un-adopted dogs. Inmates will learn how to train the dogs, making the dogs more adoptable while the inmates learn a marketable skill.

The program was approved at the Aug. 1, 2012, Fulton Commission meeting. The resolution was sponsored by District 2 Commissioner Robb Pitts after he observed a similar program in Gwinnett County.
