Body Found in Office Park; Man Sentenced for 'Horrendous' Nursing Home Conditions

Gwinnett County Police are looking into the death of a man whose body was found in the early hours Monday behind a Technology Park office building.

Police discovered the man after receiving a call of a suspicious person sleeping or possibly dead behind the office at 25 Technology Parkway South.

Corporal Edwin Ritter, spokesman for the Gwinnettt County Police Department, said that "when officers arrived on the scene they discovered a male deceased with several head injuries from an unknown origin."

Conditions at three Rome nursing homes operated by George and Rhonda Houser of Sandy Springs were so horredous that residents were near starvation, according to the United States Attorney's Office.

Roofs were leaky, air conditioning and heating units were broken, residents’ rooms were filled with bugs and rodents, rotting garbage in dumpsters were nearby, and mildew and foul odors swelled in the air.

While operating three nursing homes filled with over 300 senior citizens, the court found that Medicare and Medicaid paid the couple more than $32.9 million between 2004 and 2007 for food, medical care and other services, a media statement said.

The couple was indicted in 2010. Houser, 64, was convicted after a bench trial on April 2, 2012. Rhonda Houser, 49, pled guilty to misprision, a felony which includes neglect, in December 2011. She has not been sentenced yet.

The Suwanee arts scene will add a new wrinkle beginning in September 2012 when a tour of independent films will begin showings that last until April 2013.

City officials, teaming with the Movie Tavern and the Southern Tour of Independent Filmmakers, wiil bring a series of six films to the city, according to Crossroads, the city's official newsletter.

"We're thrilled to be a part of this tour of independent films," said Toni Shrewsbury, the city's special projects coordinator. "The screenings of these films will provide a variety of cultural samplers to our residents."

- Cartersville Patch

A Cartersville man early Sunday morning allegedly drove into the scene of an accident where injured motorists were being treated in the roadway by emergency medical crews.

Michael David Ledbetter, 28, of Brent Circle, was arrested and charged with DUI and driving on a closed roadway. He allegedly drove into the area blocked off by a fire truck and traffic cones, trapping a cone under his red 1996 Chevy Camero. Several patients were lying in the roadway following a three-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 41 at Cassville Road in Cartersville, according to the incident report.

- Canton-Sixes Patch

Disney's The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which was filmed in Canton and other locations across metro Atlanta, makes its big screen debut Wednesday.

Part of the movie, which stars Golden Globe Award winner Jennifer Garner, was shot at the  in March 2011.

"They're using our theater here for a town hall scene," Dianne Langston, the center's former executive director, said at the time. "They've painted the theater. They've put new carpet in. It looks amazing."

About 260 extras, some of them from Canton, were cast for the town hall scene.
