Big Creek Reaches Flood Stage at Kimball Bridge Road

The greenway closes at dusk, so high waters won't be an issue until this morning.

Big Creek along the had reached flood stage of 7 feet–just barely–when this video was shot on Wednesday, March 9. The scenes were taken along the section north of the parking area near the YMCA and at Webb Bridge Road.

The National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service offers information and forecasts of flooding on Big Creek, but only when it is likely.

A flood warning issued by the National Weather Service continues for Big Creek near Alpharetta until late Thursday night.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, just after the video was shot, the stage was 7.2 feet and rising. The flood stage is 7 feet. Minor flooding will continue, with the creek rising to near 8.4 feet by Thursday morning. It will fall below flood stage Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, at 8 feet minor flooding continues to expand further into the woodlands and fields along the creek. Additional portions of the Big Creek Greenway have minor flooding, which results in residents not being able to use the walking and biking paths.

Check Alpharetta's Web site or subscribe to its Nixle service to learn if portions of the greenway are closed.

On Wednesday night, the National Weather Service forecast a chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 a.m.New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch were predicted, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

On Thursday, there still will be a chance of showers before 1 p.m. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 53. Wind will become an issue, with west wind between 10 and 20 mph, but gusts as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation drops to 30 percent.
