Modern Slavery: A New Year's Resolution

An enormous New Year's Resolution: I will fight the plague of Human Trafficking.

I am not "big" into New Year's Resolutions, but as 2011 comes to a close I have set for myself a grand New Year's Resolution: In 2012, I will fight the plague of Human Trafficking (modern slavery) by becoming an Abolitionist.

The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 12.3 million people under the bonds of slavery. The most common estimate is that 27 million people are enslaved. Some organizations list that number as high as 60 million! This is not right!

I will take a stand.
I will make a difference.
I will rearrange my priorities.
I will become an abolitionist!

I do not have the clout of William Wilberforce.
I do not have the experiences of John Newton.
I do not have the courage of Harriet Tubman.
I do not have the eloquence of Sojourner Truth.
I do not have the intelligence of Frederick Douglass.
I do not have the audience of William Lloyd Garrison.
I do not have the position of President Abraham Lincoln.

But:

I have a "voice" and I will be heard.
I have a "mind" and I will be thoughtful.
I have a "body" and I will be active.

One of my favorite verses in Scripture is found in Micah 6:8. It reads, "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,Β  and to walk humbly with your God?"Β

In 2012, I will do justice by seeking to set free those that are treated unjustly. In 2012, I will love kindness by seeking to care for those that are abused and neglected. In 2012, I will, with the help of God, walk humbly on a mission to end oppression.
