Alpharetta and the surrounding communities have to so much to offer throughout the summer. On these pages you’ll find activities that are appropriate for all ages - from summer family flicks indoor and out, library events, outdoor concerts and more!

Summer Family Flicks Movie Schedule

Every week through most of July, almost every theatre offers morning times to take the kiddos to see pre-released movies at a discounted price.  Some movies are $1, some $2 and for the most part they offer a way a change of scenery, especially if it’s a gray day!  Here is the list of local theatres, movies and times for our summer enjoyment!

Summertime in Alpharetta brings outdoor fun and movies are a big part of local activities planned. Locations such as Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, Duluth, Canton, Woodstock, Dunwoody and more offer opportunities to bring the family out for an evening of FREE movies under the stars! The public is invited to join in poolside with floats and enjoy a popular family movie on the big screen. This event is free to 2013 pool pass holders. General pool admission is $3 per person. Movies in the Park™ returns to North Georgia for another year of free outdoor movies under the stars. The multi-city outdoor movie tour features free children’s activities and family-friendly outdoor movies which are shown in unique and historic settings around Atlanta.
The Canton series which is Sponsored by Northside Hospital Cherokee in association with Southern Outdoor Cinema and The City of Canton, will be hosted in the heart of downtown Canton at Browns Park located off of Elizabeth Street. The park, which is the former site of Governor Brown home, features views of the 1925 City Hall as well as a Memorial Arch (dedicated in 1923).

Movies in the Park™ is Atlanta’s most kid-friendly outdoor movie series. All movies are shown in high-definition on Southern Outdoor Cinema’s giant inflatable movie screens just before sundown in picturesque venues. Free pre-movie activities kick off one hours before movie start and include face-painting byFancyFaces4u.com. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or low-back lawn chairs. Movie snacks will be available during the movie.

Public Pools, Lazy Rivers and Spraygrounds

North Fulton is home to some amazing public pools, many with fun lazy rivers, slides and more family fun.  There are several spraygrounds in addition to pools that offer a great reprieve from the summer heat.   Below is a list of pools we are aware of, please let us know if we are missing anything!

Cumming Aquatic Center  Cumming/Forsyth County

Outdoor leisure pool open weekends May 11 – 19 (one session from 1 – 6pm)Open daily May 25 – August 7. 

The center, which besides the 120,000-gallon outdoor pool, also boosts a 50-meter competition pool and a physical therapy pool inside, debuted last June.  The outdoor pool offers a 156 foot water slide, splash play area and lazy river and will be constantly staffed by seven lifeguards.

Hours of Operation:
Monday through Saturday with two sessions each day with each requiring a separate admission fee.
Session times are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, the pool offers just one session from 1 to 6 p.m.

Lake Lanier Islands Beach and Water Park - Family Fun Park at Lanier World 
Wild Waves is a wave pool designed for guests of all ages. Float into Hollywood at Dive-In Movie Nights to see a special family-friendly flick on their 200-foot outdoor movie screen, which you can watch from in the pool at Wild Waves!  Raging River – tackle the sharp turns and relentless rapids of their river by yourself or with a companion. If you need to fuel up before moving on, stop by the Islands Grill or Midway Treats, two Lanier World dining venues offering everything from funnel cakes to char-grilled hamburgers.

Hours of operation: Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. On Mondays, the spray pad is closed for maintenance and private rentals.

Daily admission:  $2 per person (one year old and up); annual individual passes ($30) and annual family passes ($50) will also be available.

Roswell Spraygrounds

Opening Memorial Day Weekend,  two spraygrounds offer a variety of spray features, concession stands, and a rental pavilion. Daily Fees apply or purchase a Splash Pass good for both spraygrounds. Add a Roswell Area Park Pool option.  Adults not entering the water with paid child and infants are free. Summer Outdoor Concerts

This summer promises to be filled with nights of music and entertainment! There are several local establishments and venues with a schedule to keep your calendar full!  James Casto is a famous local singer who will be singing at Chattahoochee Nature Center and at Chukkar Farms each month outside.  Tickets are available online and on links below.

Alive After Five  Historic Downtown Roswell  June 20 next date

Alive After 5 takes place on the 3rd Thursday of each month from through October from 5-9pm on the streets of Historic Roswell. The free Trolley runs from Magnolia street thru the District and connects to the City Hall parking lot where there are over 400 parking spaces.  Each month, 5-6 singer/songwriters will be showcased. After each artist plays, they will head over to The Roswell Tap for more music.

Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Concert in the Gardens

Wells Fargo Concerts in the Garden returns to Atlanta’s most popular outdoor music venue this summer for its 11th annual season. This year’s exciting lineup features eight great acts – all performed on the Great Lawn:

James Casto is a Georgia based singer-songwriter.  Home by Dark Series dates are 6/7, 7/5, 8/2, 9/6 and 10/4. Bring food, invite your friends and enjoy an incredible night of music in a unforgettable setting.

Home by Dark features the best performing songwriters and musicians in the country.  2013 marks their 7th year of concerts.  Tables can be rented that seat 2, 4, 6, and 8.  If you need something larger than 8, let them know. Table reservations include table and chairs.  The food is up to you
HOME BY DARK is a “listening room” event.  Guests are expected to refrain from conversation during the performance.  Events are rain or shine.  All tables are located under the pavilion unless otherwise noted.   Gates open 90 minutes before scheduled start time.

General Admission seating is located outside of the pavilion.  No seating is provided for G.A. tickets, so bring chairs, blankets, etc. just no large tables.  Personal/TV Tray size ONLY.    All sales are final.

Concert dates are June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, October 5 and November 2. All times start at 8pm except the Nov. 2 date which begins at 7p.m.  James Casto to perform at all dates with other musicians.

Moonlight & Music Concert Series  Gwinnett Historic Courthouse lawn located in Downtown Lawrenceville 

Last Friday of each month from May through September at 8 pm.  The annual concert series features popular local and regional bands from a wide variety of musical themes in a casual and relaxed outdoor setting.  Bring chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy the free concerts provided by Lawrenceville Tourism & Trade Association and various sponsors. The concerts are FREE outdoor lawn events but reserved tables for six can be rented beginning at $65+ by contacting the Lawrenceville Visitors Center at 678.226.2639. The lawn and table seating are available starting at 6:00 p.m.

Under the Pines at Matilda’s Concert Series   Alpharetta

Welcome to the fabulously funky world of Matilda’s Cottage.  Set on 3 ½ acres among tall pines just south of downtown Alpharetta and adjacent to Wills Park, Matilda’s offers live outdoor music “Under the Pines” throughout the spring and summer months.  Bring your lawn chairs, a picnic and even your dog for an unforgettably laid back evening of entertainment. All concerts start at 8 p.m. Bring your own food and drinks. Purchase tickets at the door for $15. Kids under 16 are free when accompanied by a parent. Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival at the Fox Theater

The Fox Theatre kicks off the 2013 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival in June with six Oscar-winning films – the adventure classic Raiders of the Lost Ark, the 10th Anniversary of Finding Nemo, two of this year’s “Best Picture” nominees Les Misérables and Django Unchained, the Director’s Cut of Lawrence of Arabia, and the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Direct from movie theatres, the fantasy adventure, Oz the Great and Powerful, the story of Jackie Robinson 42, and the animated comedy adventure, The Croods  will all play on the Fox Theatre’s 26 feet high x 56’8 wide big screen. The Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival will also include the 50th Anniversary of The Birds and the popular Saturday Morning Cartoons.

In addition to seeing a movie on the biggest screen in Atlanta, the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival offers a magical pre-show experience that includes a sing-along with the Mighty Mo organ and a vintage cartoon.

Tickets are now available at the Fox Theatre Ticket Office and may be purchased online at www.foxatltix.com or 855-ATL-TIXX. All tickets are general admission. Adult tickets are $6 between May 10 and May 31, and $10 from June 1 through the movie date.  Kids under 12 and seniors (ages 65 and up) are only $5.   All tickets for the Saturday morning cartoons are $5. What are Altered Books? An Altered Book is, in extremely simple words, a book (preferably a discarded, used book), that has been altered. It is the art of taking a book and transforming it into something beautiful using your creativity and imagination. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to altered books. Teens and adults are encouraged to participate. Ages 8 and up. Entries will be accepted until 5:00 pm Friday, July 26, 2013.  Please include your full name, age, and phone number or email address with your entry. What will you create?
