CAMBRIDGE BEARS lose a heartbreaker 27-24 to Creekview

The first play of the game was a 99 yard kickoff return by JD White to score a touchdown for the Cambridge Bears.  That generated a lot of excitement from the 'pinked-out' crowd who was there to support their Bears and a cure for breast cancer.  The Bears made some pretty spectacular plays throughout, only to fall 27-24 in the last 11 seconds of the game, to the Region leading Creekview team.

It was, as simply put by Head Coach Bennett, 'a heckuva game.'  Coach Bennett acknowledged his team played their tails off and said "I couldn't have been more proud of their efforts."   As a result of an outstanding defensive effort, Creekview was held scoreless in the first quarter. This was thanks in part to 2 sacks by senior Tyren Ceballos-Rivera. First quarter offense put together a drive which included contributions by Brock Neilson with two rushes for 43 yards.  QB Brian Moore ran a 12 yard keeper and hit receivers John Hurst and Nathan Kish.  Unfortunately with 45 yards in personal foul penalties and a missed snap and field goal attempt, the Bears were unable to score again in the first quarter.

Creekview scored 2 touchdowns, one off the only Bears fumble of the game.   The Bears answered with a 30 yard kickoff return by Nick Oakes and again QB Moore impressively led the drives which included 3 passes to Christian Johnston, a perfectly executed reverse with Neilson and Hunter Smith, and a 9 yard pass to Smith for a touchdown.  Point after by kicker Clayton Hammer was good to tie the game at 14-14.

Nathan Kish looked like a pro as he timed his tackle to force an incomplete pass.  A truly stellar pass reception was made by John Hurst for a 12 yards.  Moore passed 248 yards in the game including a highlight-worthy 45 yard one to the open Christian Johnston who caught it for a touchdown.  Hammer kicked in the tying point to make it 21-21. As is often the case, it became a game in which field goals determine the final score.  Creekview kicked one to make the score 24-21.  With 2:14 minutes left on the clock, Bears had a chance for a  high pressure field goal.  Hammer put it through the uprights to tie the game once more at 24-24.

As the clock wound  down, Josh Kania and the defense pushed the Grizzlies back for a loss on one down, but Creekview eventually managed to get in range and kick in one more field goal to take  the win.

Next game for the Bears (2-5) is Friday, Oct. 25 at North Springs (2-6)
