Cambridge Bears Lose 36-11 Against Sequoyah
It was senior recognition night for Cambridge football and the final game of the regular season. The Bears lost to the region leading Sequoyah but compared to a year ago, the Bears have come a long way and did not roll over or shoot themselves in the foot in the loss. Coach Craig Bennett asserted the team was not its full self in the first half when they allowed 33 points against them. That's not to say there weren't some stellar efforts by a few players like Brock Neilson who made an impressive 17 yard rush in the first quarter. He added 2 more rushing gains to an 18 yard quarterback keeper by Brian Moore and a 6 yard pass from Moore to John Hurst to set up the first Bears score, a field goal by Clay Hammer to make it 7-3. Defenders Eric Cizek and Garrett Walton were all over the Chiefs to make some timely tackles.
The Bears added one more touchdown to their score with a pass from Moore to Hunter Smith for 40 yd gain. JD White succeeded in penetrating the Sequoyah defensive wall for the last 2 yards to score. Moore ran it in for the extra 2 points making it 33-11.
Sequoyah's secondary defenders were solid which made it really challenging for Moore to find a Bear receiver. Trey Wolfe dominated defensively in the second half with absolute all-out effort. His standout effectiveness included a sack and helped hold the Chiefs to only 3 points for the rest of game.
Coach Craig Bennett, unhappy with the loss to Sequoyah, felt the regular season on one hand was extremely successful because they "closed the gap " compared to last year. But with some success comes higher expectations and because the Bears were competitive in all the contests they lost this year, Coach Bennett felt they should have finished with a better win record.
Friday, Nov 8, at home, Cambridge meets undefeated Kell High School, in their first-ever post-season play-in game.
