Unemployment Rate Rises to 6.7 Percent in Alpharetta

The Georgia Department of Labor attributed increases across metro Atlanta to two seasonal factors.

Alpharetta's unemployment rate jumped to 6.7 percent in June from 6.2 in May, according to numbers the Georgia Department of Labor released today.

Alpharetta, which has recently had the distinction of boasting the lowest unemployment rate in cities the department tracks, lost that title to Dunwoody, whose unemployment rate rose only slightly to 6.5 from 6.4.

Neighboring Roswell also saw a rate increase to 6.7 from 6.2 in May. Johns Creek's rate jumped to 7.4 percent from 6.7.

These increases mirrored an uptick across metro Atlanta, where the unemployment rate jumped from 8.2 percent in May to 8.9 percent in June.

In a statement, the Department of Labor attributed the increase to the large numbers of education workers who are unemployed during the summer and new graduates who are considered unemployed until they find a job.
