Unemployment Rate Rises to 6.2 Percent in Alpharetta

The GA Department of Labor blames a seasonal increase in job seekers and layoffs for the higher jobless rate.

Alpharetta's unemployment rate jumped to 6.2 percent in May, though it kept the distinction of the lowest unemployment rate of cities tracked by the GA Department of Labor.
Neighboring Roswell also had a 6.2 percent jobless rate last month.
Alpharetta's rate jumped a half a percent from April's low 5.6 percent unemployment rate.
Johns Creek wasn't too far behind at 6.7 percent unemployment in May, with Sandy Springs slightly higher at 6.8 percent.
Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate increased to 8.2 percent, six-tenths of a percent higher than in April, and five tenths lower than a year ago.
The agency credited the high jobless rate to an increase in layoffs and an higher number of new job seekers entering the labor force. Both factors were considered  seasonal in nature.
