The Twisted Thread Puts 'Twist' on Consigning

The Milton shop in historic Crabapple helps consignors donate unsold clothes to local charities.

You already know local consignment shops are rife with great finds and good deals. But did you know The Twisted Thread in Milton is going a little further than the typical consignment shop when it comes to finding ways of helping customers give back to the local community?

It's true. When owner Molly Weis left corportate America to open the shop, she wanted to create an atmosphere that really engaged the community and allowed her consignors to give back, if they so chose. Several years into her venture, her ideas have become reality. Here's what she had to say about the shop:

Weis: We are an upscale resale boutique carrying women/ladies clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, handbags and more. We specialize in mid-level to high-end brands such as Anthropologie, Free People, J. Crew, Trina Turk, Milly, Tory Burch, Nanette Lapore, Rebecca Taylor, Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin, Chanel, St. John, Gucci, Johnny Was....just to name a few.

P: Say I'm currently doing a spring cleaning and going through my closet is high on the list of priorities, how would I go about consigning some of my things at your store?

W: We make the consigning process quick and efficient. I worked in corporate America for years and loved consigning. When I started The Twisted Thread I took all of those things I didn’t like about being a working woman/consignor and a customer and applied them to our policies. Consignors can drop their items off in bags, on hangers, in baskets, what ever works for them. Although they must be cleaned, they do not have to be dry cleaned. No appointment necessary, drop offs are welcome during any of our operating hours. Additionally consignors can check their accounts online to see their items as they sell. There is even an app for that! Additionally we offer a White Glove service for women with very high end labels to ensure the items are selected and transported with the least amount of exposure to damage in transit. We also work with boutiques that are looking to clear out clearance or unseasonable items.

P: Anything you don't take?

W: Definitively we do not accept Walmart, Kmart or Target brands and damaged items. Every item is unique even within a brand, so even though there are some brands that we won’t typically except, we find ourselves making the occasional exception.

P: What happens if my clothes don't sell?

W: If items are not selected from a drop-off or do not sell within the 90 day consignment term the consignor has the option to have the items returned to them or to donate the items to one of Β our donation partners. If a consignor donates their items we will provide them with a donation slip for tax purposes. Currently we donate to The Drake House and the Atlanta Assistance League, and we are thrilled to announce our newest donation partner, The Humane Society Thrift Store of Forsyth County. We also work with more seasonal charities such as The Orphan Project to provide foster children with prom attire, which is ongoing now.

P: You have some special ways of helping the customer give back locally, but how else is The Twisted Thread different from other consignment shops?

W: Although I think we are different in many ways, primarily we are different because we recognize that we are a community of consignors/customers who are all unique. We have made it part of our policy to get to know our consignors and customers as the mothers, daughters, sisters, neighbors and friends they are. The atmosphere in our store is like one of a community forum where friends connect, where mothers and daughters shop together and where we do a lot of bonding as women. We listen to suggestions and make changes where necessary or appropriate. We openly engage our consignors to find out what their expectations are and welcome their input. We want to grow with our community. We also promote growth with local artists by offering their jewelry for sale in our store and encouraging them to place their own contact/website information on the tags. We recognize that this gives our customers an opportunity to connect directly with the artist which may reduce our sales a little, but we know that as one artist grows and moves on another one will be looking for an outlet to begin selling her jewelry and making a name for herself.
