Prospect Park is History: Call it Avalon

North American Properties picks a musical name for its development site on Old Milton Parkway.

North American Properties decided on a name change for the site formerly known as Prospect Park--or, to some, "the mud pit of shame." Managing partner Mark Toro confirmed recent reports that the new name will be Avalon.

The company's survey of local residents showed most wanted a . Toro offered the company's reason for the name chosen.

"Avalon dates back to King Arthur, but it's present day associations are more in keeping with the experience we will create. The seaside towns on the east and west coasts are eclectic and memorable experiences. The song, originally recorded by Nat King Cole and covered by Natalie Cole and Harry Connick Jr., connotes the "feel" of Avalon," Toro said.

The starting in August 2012 and opening on Oct. 23, 2013, is still on track, Toro said.

North American Properties will start the paperwork procedure with Alpharetta in the next 60 to 90 days, which likely will involve a site plan and will require a land disturbance permit for the 106-acre site at some point.

One of the big questions for many local residents is when will Westside Parkway open? Toro was asked if North American Properties is any closer to dedicating its section of Westside Parkway from Old Milton Parkway to just short of Webb Bridge Road, and he said yes.

"Agreements with the city are being finalized," Toro said.

The roadway condition has been inspected, he said.
