Great Escape: Oktoberfest Is Here

This once a year festival is a great way for adults to have some fun and get away from it all.

Getting time away from the kids and stresses of everyday life can be difficult for many parents. It is an important break, however. Parents need adult time away from the kids, away from the house projects and away from the thought of work. It is because of this that Patch comes up with a new way each week for parents to get that escape. So hire a babysitter for the kids and get ready to have some fun.

Oktoberfest comes once a year and this is that time. There is no local place better to celebrate it than in the little German town of Helen in North Georgia. Visitors will feel like they have gone to Germany on vacation rather than just driven a couple of hours away.

The celebration is a party that continues throughout the end of September and entire month of October. Guests can enjoy authentic music from live bands every day and those brave ones can even get out on the floor and polka. German foods and beer are the highlight of the event. Long banquet tables are set up so people can sit and enjoy the party while having a meal and drink. People watching is always an interesting activity during Oktoberfest since many will dress up and everyone is there to have fun. This is a great activity to invite friends along with you on because the more people who are there, the merrier it is for everyone.

Also in Helen this month will be several hiking trips, concerts, art shows and even a Miss Oktoberfest pageant. Activities will occur every day of the week during the festival. For a list of activities, see the official website for the city here.

Admission to the Oktoberfest is free on Sundays, $9 on Saturdays and $7 Monday through Friday. The event is held at the Helen Festhalle at 1074 Edelweiss Strasse in Helen.
