A Midtown firm's work on Alpharetta's Envision Main Street initiative won it a Large Community award from the Georgia Planning Association.
TSW's work on the Augusta Sustainable Development Implementation Program and Outstanding Planning Process earned it a second award for Outstanding Planning Document.
“Alpharetta’s Envision Main Street Initiative is focused on redesigning the town’s historic Main Street to better serve the community’s current and future needs,” said Thomas Walsh, TSW principal. “Through a series of interactive community meetings and a visual preference survey, we collected and analyzed ideas from residents, business owners, local employees, shoppers, diners, visitors and regional commuters and distilled these ideas into a single, shared community vision."
Walsh said the plan includes:
- Reducing vehicular speeds to increase safety and livability,
- Lane changes to provide optimal capacity and accessibility,
- Improved pedestrian safety and experience,
- Shared pedestrian/bicycle facilities,
- Additional on-street parking and streetscapes designed for outdoor dining and strolling.
“The Augusta Sustainable Development Implementation Program is a detailed multi-modal transportation corridor plan for a 4.5-mile main thoroughfare that runs north-south through the core of the city,” said Adam Williamson, TSW principal.
Each year the Georgia Planning Association recognizes local communities, regional commissioners and planners for their work to make Georgia a better place to live. Projects are recognized for innovation, transferability, quality, effectiveness of implementation, comprehensiveness, public participation, technology, equity, sustainability and collaboration.
