Alpharetta PAL Safety Day

As April is nationally known as distracted driving Awareness month and emphasis has been placed on highlighting the dangers of driving while distracted, we at PAL will be hosting a safe driving workshop.  The event will be held on the PAL premises on May 4, 2012, and will consist of a simulated driving exercise in the parking lot which allows parents and children to drive in golf karts with various simulations to mimic common distractions real drivers face.  We will also have local police officers speak about common traffic violations and mistakes drivers make while on the road that may put their lives in danger.  We hope you will come out to join us as we seek to educate young drivers and their families in an effort to keep our roads and drivers safe while behind the wheel.

  • Driving While Drunk Simulation

                        1.         So you think you can drive after having one too many drinks?  Try your hand at driving a golf cart while wearing “Drunk Busters Impairment Goggles”. Let’s see how many cones you leave standing!

                        2.         Most of us are aware that drinking and driving kills. In fact, an alcohol-related traffic fatality occurs every 30 minutes. But did you know that an unopened beer could cost you your drivers’ license?  Or that a DUI could cost you the down payment on your first car?

                        3.         Did you know that driving while texting is just as dangerous as driving while drunk?

                        4.         We “double dog dare you” to take this test!

  • Bicycle Safety

                  1.         Is your bike ready for summer activities?  Do you now how to pump up your tires?  Or how to change a flat tire?

                  2.         Does your helmet fit properly?

                  3.         Do you know the “Rules of the Road” for bikes?  For example, which side of the road should you ride on?  How do you signal that you are making a left turn?

                  4.         Let the Alpharetta Police Bicycle Patrol show you the ropes of “Bicycle Safety”!

  • Fire Safety

                  1.         Do you know what to do if you smell smoke?  Have you and your family designated a safe place to meet?

                  2.         Do you change the batteries in your smoke detector at least twice each year?

                  3.         Tour the “Public Safety Smoke House” to learn exactly what to do if you are ever in this situation.
