BBB Advises: Ring In The New Year Safe If You've Had A Little Too Much To Drink

Do you plan to welcome in the New Year with a party?  If so, alcohol will probably be served and you will want to make sure you get home safe and that you don’t hurt anyone if you’ve been drinking.

BBB has found two agencies that will provide free or low cost service to take intoxicated drivers home and keep them from getting behind the wheel and risking the lives of others.

One such agency is Tow To Go that serves Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. Their information is copied below:

Tow to Go Service Area(s) Phone Number
FL, GA or TN (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246

The Auto Club Group and Bud Light provide the Tow to Go service to discourage an intoxicated driver from getting behind the wheel and risking the lives and safety of other motorists. Not only does Tow to Go remove the intoxicated driver—it also enables AAA and Bud Light to remind the public to always choose a designated driver for a safe ride home.

Important Tow To Go Guidelines:

• Tow trucks can take up to two people home; if there are more people in your party—you will need to make other arrangements to get home safely.

• You can’t make an appointment to use the Tow to Go service, it is designed to be used as a last resort so have a designated driver before you have your first drink.

• It may be necessary, in certain situations, for AAA to contact a cab company or local law enforcement to assist with getting the intoxicated individual a safe ride.

Another organization is SafeRide America. Their mission is: is to pro-actively prevent all types of impaired driving and to assist children that have been orphaned or injured by impaired driving crashes.

“By offering to drive people AND their cars for them for about the same price as a taxi addresses goal #1 and our “pay us later” policy for SafeRide Service addresses goal #2. Yes we do charge a fee for our designated driver services but will provide service, “no questions asked," if someone does not have the money to pay for our designated driver services. All we ask anyone to do if they do not have some or our entire fee is to simply “pay us later."

If you are hosting a New Year's Eve party, following a few simple rules could prevent a tragedy:
• Plan ahead by naming a "designated driver." Make this your responsibility as the host.
• Contact a local cab company to provide rides for your guests.
• Serve non-alcoholic beverages as an option to your guests.
• Stop serving alcohol to your guests several hours before the party ends.
• Provide your guests with a place to stay overnight in your home.

If you are attending New Year's Eve parties and celebrations:
• If you drink, don't drive.
o Plan ahead and always designate a sober driver before the party or celebration begins.
o If you are impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit, or get a sober friend or family member to come pick you up.
o Or, stay where you are until you are sober.
• Take the keys from someone if you think he/she is too impaired to drive.

BBB wishes all a very Happy and SAFE New Year!
