○      Accomplishment J.C. heard a man drowning in the Gulf of Mexico and threw a lifejacket to him an incredibly long distance, saving his life.

○      Key to Awesomeness: J.C., the star quarterback of his youth football team, had the presence of mind to not wait, but immediately throw his own lifejacket to a man who fell out of his own boat. J.C. and his mother, Lisa French, had taken a kayak out to a sandbar to search for sand dollars, or they wouldn't have had the lifejacket with them.

Windward Rotarian Chris Mixon, his coach and the person who nominated him, said on the long Labor Day weekend J.C. only found two sand dollars. "To give a sense of what a special kid this is, J.C. gave the man one of his sand dollars because he thought he needed it for good luck.

Club President Margi Urquhart said it shows that for heroism, "You don't need any special skills, "you just have to take action."
