'UNPRECEDENTED' and 'CATASTROPHIC': Will Georgia Storm Live Up to Forecasts?

Georgia has already been declared a federal disaster area. Are the forecasts overblown?

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service are not often viewed as drama queens. So Georgians started buzzing when the forecasters today said that the coming ice and snow storm could be an event of "historical proportions."

The latest headline from the Peachtree City office predicts "catastrophic" ice amounts of one-third to three-quarters of an inch from Atlanta east along Interstate 20. If it happens, that would likely send power lines and tree limbs crashing to the ground, plunging parts of the state into darkness.

President Obama has already declared the state a federal disaster area, so FEMA can assist local efforts where needed.

What do you think? Are the warnings appropriate or too dire? Have you seen worse Georgia winters?
