Take Part in Creating Programs for Milton Senior Center

The Milton Neighborhood Senior Center opened Monday to learn what the community's interests are to center programs around them.

Seniors in the Milton area can get a look at the Milton Neighborhood Senior Center and let its manager know what their interests are.

"Basically what we are doing right now, beginning today and through July 15, is keeping the center open from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.," said Melinda Ross, manager of the senior center.

"What my goal is to find out more about them and the things that they enjoy doing, because that's what you want to center your programs around," she said.

Community of Christ Church at 3315 Francis Road has allowed the senior center to use their fellowship hall.

"We'll have exercise classes, education classes, nutrition classes and arts and crafts when the center opens," Ross said.

Visitors to the Milton Senior Center can get a preview of what's available and check out its location. Ross will talk more with them about transportation available to and from the center, and the meals that will be served during the week, Monday through Friday. The start of these services will be announced at a later date.

The Milton Neighborhood Senior Center probably will stay at the church until April 2014.

The City of Milton is refurbishing one of their historic homes, the Hopewell House, and that's where our permanent home will be," Ross said.

For now, the hours of the senior center are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Starting on July 15, those hours should be expanded to 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Fulton County, its contract provider Senior Services North Fulton and the city of Milton have collaborated to open the center.

The Milton Neighborhood Senior Center will provide active seniors the opportunity to socialize, learn, and maintain special relationships. They will enjoy meeting new friends and participating in programs of personal interest. Hot lunches will be provided along with transportation to and from the center. Exercise, education, dancing, table games, and other activities will help active seniors to continue to live happier, healthier lives filled with purpose. Activities will also include weekly outings.
