Patch Recipes: Celebrate Chocolate Cake Day!

Time is running out to celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day!

Did you know today (Jan. 27) is National Chocolate Cake Day? It's not too late to bake a cake for yourself. To help you with the process, we have a recipe for you.

The following recipe comes from Kathi McNeil, who shared her mother's formula for chocolate cake with Mount Vernon Patch in Virginia. Visit Johns Creek Patch to see a recipe for Carol Pope’s Chocolate Cake. Or share your own recipe with your neighbors here on Alpharetta-Milton Patch.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 tbsp. of cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 tsp. of vinegar
  • 2 tsp. of vanilla
  • 10 tbsp. of vegetable oil
  • 2 cups of cold water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, combine all the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and baking soda. Mix dry ingredients well and make two small holes and one large hole.

Pour the vinegar into one small hole and the vanilla into the other small hole. Pour the vegetable oil into the large hole. Pour two cups of cold water over everything and mix about 50 strokes with a wooden spoon.

Bake in a greased 13-by-9-inch cake pan for 35 to 40 minutes or 2 9-inch round pans for 30 to 35 minutes. A toothpick should come out clean when the cake is finished baking.
