North Fulton Schools Host Sept. 11 Ceremonies

Milton, Cambridge and Roswell High Schools will all commemorate the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on American soil.

North Fulton residents won't have a shortage of events they can take part in to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

CambridgeMilton and Roswell high schools will hold events of their own to remember the 3,000 lives lost on that tragic day.

The city of Milton's police, fire, staff and elected officials will support the two student-led events in their city limits.

"It is our duty to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001," said Milton Police Chief Deborah Harrell. "The local youth taking on these projects are truly special, and deserve to be supported fully."

Milton Fire Chief Robert Edgar agreed, adding "we're proud to take part in these ceremonies."

"That our young people are the ones carrying them out just makes it more special," he stated."

Milton High student Savannah Bailey is organizing the sixth year of Milton's Sept. 11th display, an honor she inherited from her brother, Zach Bailey.

Beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Savannah and volunteers will place 2,977 flags on the front lawn of the school - one for each life lost during the attacks.

On Wednesday at 8 a.m., there will be a short memorial service to commemorate the lives lost in the attacks. The event is open to the public, and residents are invited to come and visit the display throughout the day.

"I have decided to take over the tradition of preparing the Sept. 11 memorial at Milton High School as a reminder of the great loss our country suffered and as a visual reminder of the lives lost and those who gave their lives to help others," Savannah added.

To help place flags onto Milton High's lawn, call the school at (770) 740-7000.

For the second year in a row, Cambridge junior Caroline Willis has enlisted her fellow students and community members to help organize the school's 9/11: Never Forget Memorial.

"The goal of the project is to show people that each person who passed away is not just a number," Caroline said. "Every single person had family, friends and people who cared about them."

The students will also place 2,977 American flags on the front lawn of Cambridge High School.

The public is invited to attend the memorial and pay their respect to the men and women who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. A memorial will also be on site for those who wish to write down their thoughts.

Along with the flag display, the Cambridge chorus on Wednesday morning will sing the National Anthem through the announcements.

Roswell senior Madeleine Nolte is also organizing a Sept. 11 ceremony at her school. The event, which starts at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, will feature State Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) as the keynote speaker.

The school also plans to have 2,977 flags displayed on its front lawn to honor the victims in the terrorist attacks.
