Letter to the Editor: Home Depot Volunteers Transform Post 201

The American Legion Post 201 in Alpharetta really showed that it had been built 45 years ago, but the home improvement store company renovated the building inside and out and its grounds.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I am writing to publicly express the everlasting gratitude of the 825 wartime veterans of Alpharetta American Legion Post 201 to the men and women of Home Depot.

The Home Depot Foundation is an organization which has earned a reputation as an outstanding corporate citizen through its many good works throughout the communities it serves. What they have done for us is nothing short of a dream come true.

Case in point: the recent work at Post 201, transforming it in ways that our members would never have dreamed possible or could have afforded to do on our own. On November 7th, with an army of 250 to 300 volunteers from The Home Depot stores around the metro area and the corporate headquarters, they painted, planted and renovated our 1968 vintage post home into a more modern, efficient and attractive place to gather and do our work on behalf of veterans and the larger community.

Volunteers from this Atlanta-based multi-national organization helped to build a new deck, upgraded our legion baseball facilities, landscaped our nearly 14 acre campus, updated our HVAC,  repaired aging flooring and replaced lighting with energy efficient alternatives. Even members of the company’s executive leadership team spent the day landscaping and installing flooring.

The considerable financial donation in material and personnel from the Home Depot Foundation is simply beyond our wildest dreams, and way beyond our organization’s ability to accomplish on its own. Admittedly, Post 201 and most veterans’ organizations forego that kind of important maintenance and upkeep simply because we would rather earmark any funds to our mission of helping veterans and the community, especially its youth.

Amazing to me, is the fact that prior to, during and following all this work, Home Depot has eschewed our efforts to garner for them any publicity about their altruism and their commitment to the men and women who have worn the uniform of our armed forces.

Hopefully, through this letter, the Legionnaires of Post 201, its Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders can not only say thank you but to let the public know what Home Depot Foundation and the company’s management and staff have done.

Gratefully,

Marty Farrell, Commander
