Find Your Spring Break Fun In The Alpharetta-Milton Area

Whether it's an all-day camp at a nature center, hiking on a greenway or mountain trail or just flying a kite, staying in town doesn't have to be boring.

Not everyone hit the road for the beach, Disney World or some other Spring Break destination. For those of us left behind, there's still things to do and places to take our children this week.

Here at Alpharetta-Milton Patch I'll offer up some ideas daily. Add your own ideas in the comments below and maybe they'll be put on tomorrow's list.

  • Camp Kingfisher: Chattahoochee Nature Center has a full week of events for families and children, but the daily camp for children from kindergarten through seventh grade is the most comprehensive. It's too late to register for today, but check if spots are open Tuesday-Thursday. Extended care is available from 8:30-9 a.m. and again from 4-6:15 p.m. Call 770-992-2055 ext. 222 to see if spots are available and to register, or download a form. $170 member, $190 non-member for three days.
  • Go Fly a Kite: April is National Kite Month. A strong breeze Monday afternoon should make it great kite flying weather, but watch out for those gusts of wind (and trees and power lines). Alpharetta and Milton parks have good spots to try your hand at this time-honored tradition.
  • Craft Week:  Children ages 4-12 can have fun with a different craft each day this week at Chattahoochee Nature Center. Reuse and recycle items to make fun, take-home projects. Daily 1 p.m.-2 p.m.
  • Bio-Buggies: Visit the Chattahoochee Nature Center to learn about birds and/or bugs that may be seen this spring. A docent will share activities and games for children ages 4-12 in which to take part or explore on their own.
  • Spring Fling: Ocee Library branch on Abbotts Bridge Road starts the spring breat with games, snacks prizes and fun for ages 5-12. The program is free and open to the public, but is limited to the first 50 children. Call 770-360-8897 for information.
  • Greenway: Hike the in Alpharetta, accessing it at Rock Mill Park, by the YMCA off North Point Parkway, off Haynes Bridge Road near Mansell,  off North Point Parkway between Ethan Allen furniture store and the North Point Market theater, or behind the Mansell Crossing theater just down the street. Or you can even try Forsyth's greenway for a change, access it from Union Hill Road to Bethelview Road. Keep in mind the section from McFarland Parkway to Union Hill Road is temporarily closed for repairs.
  • Climb a Mountain: Sawnee Mountain Preserve & Visitors Center offers opportunities for hiking and picnics. The Indian Seats are a natural rock formation at the top of the trail system that gives visitor's a scenic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Bring the kids by the visitors center, which is an award-winning learning center. (But don't tell the kids they are learning, it'll spoil their fun!)
  • Volunteer: Check with North Fulton Community Charities or your favorite organization to see if they have opportunities for you and your children. Most can only allow older children to participate. Get the younger ones involved by shopping at your local grocer for the food pantry.

Coming on Tuesday: Suggestions for indoor activities for a cooler day and for those with allergies.
